Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth Safely

In our Halloween treat recipe, we prioritize the use of  clean gut-friendly ingredients that are gentle on the digestive system. We avoid processed and refined foods, instead opting for real, nutrient-dense foods that are easy for the body to digest.  We understand the importance of finding delicious options that won't cause discomfort. When crafting our recipe, we have gut health in mind from start to finish.  Our aim is to make a treat that satisfies cravings while also nourishing the body. We believe that no one should have to compromise flavor for the sake of their gut. That's why we've developed a delicious, gut-friendly recipe perfect for the Halloween season.

In addition to these considerations, we also want to emphasize the holistic and natural methods for managing diverticulitis. While our Halloween treat is designed to be gentle on the digestive system, it is important to remember that it is just one part of a comprehensive approach to managing diverticulitis. Incorporating other lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, stress management, and adequate hydration can also contribute to overall gut health.

By taking a whole-body approach, we can find natural ways to support digestive wellness during the Halloween season and beyond.

Instructions:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the pumpkin puree, cacao powder, and maple syrup. Mix well until smooth.
  • Gradually add the coconut flour, stirring until the mixture thickens and forms a dough-like consistency.
  • If desired, fold in the dark chocolate chips for added richness and flavor.
  • Using your hands, roll the dough into small bite-sized balls and place them on a lined baking sheet.
  • Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the bites to firm up.
  • Once firm, remove from the refrigerator and enjoy your delicious gut-friendly Halloween treat!
  • Additionally you can roll pumpkin bites in coconut flakes to enjoy as a Stage 4 treat!

We hope you enjoy making these Chocolate Pumpkin bites as much as we enjoyed creating the recipe! If you're looking for even more gut-friendly recipes that are quick and easy for the season, here are a few more of our favorite ideas:

Pumpkin Juice: Stage 1

  • In a juicer, add cubed pumpkin, green apple, and ginger. Finish with cinnamon, clove, and a pinch of sea salt to taste! This recipe can also be found in our "Pumpkin Palooza" blog post.

As a reminder, Stage 1 of the 4 Stages of Eating for Diverticulitis is focused on giving your gut a rest and allowing it to heal from inflammation. During this initial stage, the priority is providing your body with nutrients and energy while being very gentle on your digestive system. This is why pumpkin juice is such a great choice for Stage 1. While your gut may not be ready for higher fiber foods or more complex recipes, this juice allows you to enjoy the festive Halloween season in a gut-friendly way, while still obtaining the energy and nutrients your body needs.

Sweet Potato Pudding: Stage 2

  • Puree baked sweet potato with coconut milk, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Top with whipped coconut cream.

Stage 2 involves gradually reintroducing fiber by incorporating pureed and mashed foods. This stage allows you to slowly increase fiber intake while still keeping foods easy to digest as your gut continues healing. The sweet potato pudding recipe we’ve shared is a perfect Stage 2 option. By pureeing them into a smooth, pudding-like consistency, you make these nutrients accessible while avoiding irritation to your digestive system. As you continue progressing through the 4 Stages of Eating for Diverticulitis, you can begin reintroducing more textures and fiber diversity. But this sweet potato pudding lets you bridge the gap from liquids to solid foods, supporting your gut health through the transitional Stage 2.

Baked Cinnamon Apple Chips: Stage 3

  • Thinly slice apples, coat with cinnamon and bake until crispy.

Stage 3 of the 4 Stages of Eating for Diverticulitis involves incorporating more diversity of textures like roasted, cooked, and sautéed foods. This stage allows you to continue gradually adding fiber back into your diet in a gentle, gut-friendly way. Baking them into crispy chips makes this fiber less harsh on your digestive system than raw apple would be. By slowly reintroducing fiber through cooked, baked foods like these apple chips, you enable your gut to adjust and strengthen in a step-wise manner. Rather than diving into high raw fiber foods, this recipe allows you to dabble in Stage 3 with a gut-conscious food preparation method. As you gain confidence with cooked and baked foods, you can build up to a more expansive, gut-healthy diet.

Apple Monsters: Stage 4

  • Slice apples into rounds and spread a layer of nut butter on top. Add some spooky eyes using raisins or dark chocolate chips. These adorable apple monsters are both nutritious and fun!

Stage 4 marks a transition back to incorporating some raw foods as your gut health continues to improve. This stage is about slowly reintroducing fiber-rich foods in their whole, natural form to enable your digestive system to adapt in a gentle way. The sliced apple treat recipe we’ve provided is a mindful Stage 4 option. Enjoy this apple recipe as a sign of your progress, while continuing to listen to your body. With patience through the 4 Stages of Eating for Diverticulitis, you can achieve long-term gut health and the ability to again enjoy a wider range of nourishing foods.

Conclusion:

This Halloween serves as a reminder that even with digestive conditions like diverticulitis, you can still participate in the festivities and enjoy seasonal treats. By taking a gradual, staged approach through the 4 Stages of Eating for Diverticulitis to reintroduce fiber and gut-healthy foods, you can indulge your cravings while also supporting your body's needs.

Whether you try our gut-friendly chocolate pumpkin bites or opt for other recipes in line with your current stage, our aim is to provide you with delicious, nutritious options. But we want to emphasize that these holiday recipes are one part of a broader lifestyle focused on health and healing.

As you continue your diverticulitis journey, remember to be patient with yourself, listen to your body, and incorporate natural solutions for managing inflammation and restoring digestive wellness. This comprehensive, holistic approach is the key to long-term gut health.
