From Desperation to Empowerment: How Robin's Guidance Transformed My Life
"Hello, I'd like to introduce myself to all of you! My name is Monique, and I joined the Diverticulitis Facebook group in December 2021. Over time, I have also taken on a role as a group moderator. My journey with diverticulitis began with a trip to the ER, where the diagnosis was confirmed. Initially, I had a basic understanding of the condition, but little did I know how deeply it would impact my life.
Like many of you, I sought answers and support by joining various groups. I'll be honest, my initial focus was on finding quick relief, without fully grasping the extent of the lifestyle changes necessary to effectively manage this disease. To my surprise, my primary care physician and gastroenterologist were not aligned in their approach, leaving me feeling frustrated, scared, and hopeless. The pain was unbearable, and all I wanted was a clear path forward and relief!
Alongside diverticulitis, I was already struggling with severe GERD and relied on prescription PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) while undergoing numerous tests to determine the cause of my persistent nausea after eating or drinking anything. My GERD seemed uncontrollable, with my gastroenterologist continuously adjusting my medication regimen or adding new ones. Additionally, I was burdened by stress, grief, and toxic relationships, unaware that they were contributing to the exacerbation of my diverticulitis.
In my search for a quick fix, I stumbled upon this group. What struck me immediately was the group's organization and consistency. While I found valuable information from fellow members, I gravitated towards the insights shared by Robin and her team of moderators. Witnessing others in the group navigate their own journeys, I focused on success stories while filtering out advice that leaned towards surgery, an option I was hesitant to consider, fearing further complications and the loss of my colon.
The initial stages were challenging. Prior to joining this group, I unintentionally was on liquids for nearly four weeks, afraid to eat. I felt weak, had an elevated heart rate, and struggled to climb a flight of stairs without almost fainting. I became a shell of myself, sinking into depression. Panic attacks escalated, and I even began to question if I was developing an eating disorder, as I couldn't bring myself to try anything.
I was grappling with smoldering diverticulitis, desperately trying to move forward but feeling stuck. Despite months of attempting to implement the protocol independently, I faced numerous challenges, constantly relying on the search function for answers. Each time I thought I had a starting point, I would experience setbacks and pain. At this point, I became aware that Robin offered one-on-one coaching. While nervous about reaching out, I recognized the need for extra support. I was confronting unfamiliar territory, lacking expertise in any of these areas. I discovered that Robin was launching a Diverticulitis Rescue Yourself Challenge, a 21-day program focused on eliminating trigger foods, healing the colon and gut, and restoring natural balance. I decided to give it a go! During this workshop, I worked closely with Robin and a dedicated group, where I learned to effectively implement the protocol, gain momentum, progress through the stages, and develop a deeper understanding of the mind-body connection. It is no exaggeration to say that the workshop transformed my life. With Robin's guidance, I gained the skills to manage this disease, alleviate my fears around eating, successfully wean off PPIs, and reduce inflammation throughout my body. I should mention that I have a separate diagnosis of seronegative rheumatoid arthritis, requiring regular lab tests every 3 months. My rheumatologist wholeheartedly supports Robin's protocol, and we have evidence of its positive impact on managing my RA as well. Joining the workshop was a pivotal decision for me, as I question how long it would have taken to make significant progress had I not participated. Another invaluable aspect of the workshop was having all the necessary information at my fingertips. Instead of sifting through numerous posts and piecing together fragmented advice, everything I needed was conveniently accessible, allowing me to refer back to it whenever needed. I also learned effective journaling techniques, enabling me to identify triggers and patterns more easily, a tool that proved immensely valuable!! Now, 1 1/2 years after my initial infection, I closely adhere to the protocol. I have found a balance and developed a profound understanding of nutrition and the mind-body connection. I have also been able to share what I've learned with my family, who have embraced this way of life, providing tremendous support on my journey.
